How To Boost Up Your Hard Drive Speed
Posted on Sep, 15, 2017
A hard drive is one of the most important components of any computer. They provide storage solution by storing various user data like documents, pictures, audios, videos, and more. However, there are different kinds of hard drive available in different sizes and storage capacities that can be used across various laptops and desktops.
The performance of a system depends upon the speed of accessing data from such hard drives. A normal hard drive consists of various mechanical components including a magnetic surface. In addition, it consists of a read-write head, which is responsible for reading and writing of the data. In spite of the growing technology and market full of silicon based storage options, such mechanical hard drives continue to flourish the computer market.
If you are still using a mechanical hard drive on your system, you can optimize the hard drive to boost the overall performance of the system. There are various ways of improving the system performance, based on the type of platform you are working on. Defragmentation is one of the means using which the hard drive performance can be optimized. There are various other inbuilt features on Windows and Mac platforms that can be used. Mac automatically defragments the hard drive on a timely basis whereas, with the latest Windows 8, you can use the ‘Defragment and optimize your drive’ option to defragment the hard drive.
In order to defragment the hard drive on a Windows based system, you need to follow the below-mentioned steps.
- From the upper right corner of the screen, click ‘Search’.
- A search box appears.
- Enter Defragment in the box provided.
- Click ‘Defragment and optimize your drive’.
- Choose the drive to optimize from ‘Status’ bar.
- Click ‘Analyze’, to check the optimization level of the hard drive.
- The ‘Current Status’ column shows the percentage of fragmented files.
- Click ‘Optimize’.
Note: The process of optimization does not hamper any on going work on the system provided it is not being used by another program, However, the time required to optimize the hard drive depends on the size of the drive and the degree of fragmentation.
Such optimization process can be scheduled by going to the ‘Change Settings’ option under ‘Defragment and optimize your drives’.
In case the drive is not listed under the Optimize drive option, it might be because of an error. You can perform a repair operation by following the below-mentioned steps.
- From the upper right section of the screen, tap ‘Search’.
- A search box appears.
- Enter ‘This PC’.
- Right-click the hard drive to be repaired and click ‘Properties’.
- Click ‘Tool’.
- Click ‘Check’ under the ‘Error checking’ option.
The above-mentioned procedure is indeed very helpful in boosting up the speed of your hard drive. You can also try using a hybrid drive by using an SSD along with the hard drive. Such a combination improves the system performance, by taking the advantages from both SSD and hard drives.
